Goin' Through Changes

Zumpano:
Goin' Through Changes

[Sub Pop]
Rating: 7.7
Cute, flowery, and just plain neat. Zumpano are the '60s pop band that got stuck in a timehole and accidentally flown to the '90s. Man, this stuff is catchy as hell, and I'll be damned if it's ever gonna escape my kung fu grip.

When the record opens with "Behind The Beehive," you're immediately drawn in by the happy love melodies and brilliant lyrics. ("There are centuries between us.") But when the record's second track, "Broca's Ways" puts its complex pop structure in your ears, you realize they're not typical.

This is music it takes a brain to write. Like, even though Weezer and Oasis make for a nice listen, you know damn well your fucking dog could've written the song. Three chords and a love tune. Isn't it getting a bit played out? People hated the Carpenters for a reason, folks. Ironically, this rebellion against industry standards sounds remarkably like that despised husband and wife duo. Hmm...
