Haymaker Market
Collaborating with some 20 musicians including Jonathan Siegel of Camper Van Beethoven and Nate Query of the Decemberists, Michael Zapruder makes beautiful folk-pop ballads resonant of the voice of Rufus Wainwright and wordplay of Andrew Bird. "Haymaker Market" is the story of an imperial town's new farmers market that changes the city for the better. New instruments arrive on the song constantly-- an easy enough "people come to farmers market" conceit-- and the song's energy increases likewise, from sweet-talking acoustic strums at the start to the drums and keyboard additions that foreshadow the chorus. About two minutes in, the action stops, and a wild trumpet solo reprises the melody. "They'll use your name/ to name the avenue," Zapruder sings in the finale, putting an end to any suspicions that "Haymaker Market" is secretly about punching things.
